Conway's Club Date
by Henry Mason
Conway Stewart Conway Stuart was a member of Sentimental Journey for many years. He was a retired professional musician who, in a forty-year career had played his way from trombone to lead trumpet to bass trombone. He had quite a sense of humor and didn't mind administering a lesson to the self important.

Among other things, Conway was a fine golfer. When the band was booked into a golf resort, Conway was in heaven. We were playing at Sky Valley, a resort in North Georgia one year and Conway naturally headed for the Pro Shop to get a tee time. Unfortunately the course was booked for a businessmen's tournament and there was no space for an individual. Undaunted, Conway found out who was in charge of the tournament and explained that he would be there only for a couple of days and could he enter the tournament in order to get to play the course.

The man in charge stated that there would be no problem, but that they had a custom of X dollars per hole,to "keep it interesting". Conway, a genial looking older man (he was then nearing 70), agreed, saying "Maybe it'll help me pay attention".

He proceeded to clean the clocks and the wallets of everyone in the tournament. He was simply the best golfer there.

The following year they would't let him play.

A demanding chart or the 18th hole, Conway always gave it his best shot.
