Very Hot Trumpets
by Henry Mason
Bandleader Allen Humphrey, founder of Tampa Florida's "Swing Sound Orchestra" tells the story of working a garden party in the high rent district in Atlanta some years ago. The theme was "South Seas" and the bandstand was lit by Tiki Torches.

The band was swinging away and as the saxes finished a soli the brass was supposed to hit a soli fortissimo "on one" to begin the out chorus. As the saxes sat down, "one" came...and went...NOTHING.

Allen said that before he could turn and give the brass a dirty look for not counting, he heard, "The trumpets are on FIRE!"

A Tiki torch had fallen into the bandstand, and the trumpets were indeed in flames! The trombones were half heartedly trying to put them out (after a quick vote on whether to let them burn).

Since no one was hurt it became funny...later.
