Our band played a library lecture series intro concert last September, "The Music of World War II". As many of you know, I write the intro's for the pieces the band plays. About half way through the concert, the MC read: "Always when a musical group performs historical music, there is a question of authenticity of the performance.
Well, one of the band's trombonists performed many of the pieces we are playing tonight in a Navy dance band in Casablanca in 1943. George, will you stand up and take a bow?" Applause. (This was unrehearsed, and something of a surprise to George.) "Well, how about it, George? Is our performance tonight the way it sounded back during
the war?"
The audience's attention is riveted on this tall, handsome 80 year old veteran holding his half century old Bach 12.
George says in a clear
voice, "No" and sits back down.
The MC stood there slack jawed as the audience gave us a laugh and then the biggest appaluse of the night.
